Summary	The   purpose of the institute is to creat a database of medicinal and food   resources, collect information of the distribution and biological   characteristics of medicinal and food plants, determine their properties,   tastes, and efficacy usedin empirical   prescriptions as traditional Chinese medicines, develop technology for   isolation and purification of active components, and elucidate the mechanisms   underlying the pharmacological and toxicological functions.
