JSNU Professional Development Project

I. An Introduction to “China-Africa Friendship” SENIOR SCHOLARS Initiative

In order to realize the consensus of China-Africa Cooperation Forum Beijing Summit 2018 and enhance educational exchanges and cooperation with African countries, China’s Ministry of Education has designed the “China-Africa Friendship” SENIOR SCHOLARS Initiative operated by China Scholarship Council. It encourages Chinese universities to actively corporate with African governments, universities and enterprises for tailored joint training programs so as to cultivate professional elites and managerial talents as well as teachers and school administrators for Africa at various levels in agriculture, medical care, education and other sectors.

II. An Introduction to Jiangsu Normal University

Established in 1952, Jiangsu Normal University (JSNU) is one of top universities in Jiangsu Province, jointly sponsored and administrated by Jiangsu Province and Ministry of Education. The University is located in the historic and cultural city --- Xuzhou City with a history of over 2600 years. The City enjoys geographic advantages in East China as an important transportation hub.

JSNU offers 63 undergraduate programs, 35 master’s programs under the first layer of disciplines and one doctorate program. At present, JSNU has an enrollment of over 20 thousand undergraduates, over 3500 doctor and master candidates. Its population of faculty is 1636, including 335 full professors and 576 associate professors, among whom 50 professors are titled as “Cheung Kong Scholars”, or “National Distinguished Young Scholars”. Besides, the University has 18 teaching or research teams at the levels of province or state.

The University attaches great importance to disciplines and researches. It has 6 prestigious disciplines and 12 key subjects at the provincial level. Its disciplines of chemistry, engineering are ranked as top 1% of ESI; and 21 subjects are listed on the Best Chinese Subjects by Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities 2018. In 2019, JSNU is ranked 56^th on the Ranking of China University Social Science Researches. Its Nature Index has entered the “Top100” universities in mainland China. JSNU comes to the 109^th among Chinese mainland universities on the US News rankings 2019.

As one of the first group of universities entitled to accept international students and a member of China Scholarship Council (CSC), JSNU has been approved the projects such as CSC Provincial Universities-Targeted Initiative, CSC Sino-US Cultural Exchanges Initiative, CSC Silk Road Postgraduate Initiative and others. JSNU has close ties with over 80 sister schools in the world, including universities in UK, US, Australia and Russia. It has jointly established research platforms with Harvard University, the University of Edinburgh, and University College London. JSNU has frequent exchanges and communication with universities in the United States, Australia, Japan, Russia, Belorussia and other countries in joint programs and credit transfer. And it also conducts faculty and staff training programs with world-known universities, such as Harvard University, Hong Kong University and so on. JSNU makes full use of the favorable policies of CSC and CI Headquarters to help international students to take degree courses or non-degree courses such as Mandarin. It attracts international students from 46 countries and regions. And JSNU has co-established two Confucius Institutes in the United States and Australia, which are honored respectively as “Confucius Institute of the Year”. As a result, JSNU is honored as “An Outstanding Chinese Partner of Confucius Institute of the Year (2018)” by CI Headquarters.

The Chinese government provides the accepted trainees with scholarships, based on the stipulations of CSC Senior Scholars Initiative.

V.  Application Requirements

1. Citizens of any African country who are friendly to China are eligible to apply;

2. Applicants should be in good health;

3. Applicants should have relevant profession knowledge or relevant professional management background;

4. Applicants should be a master’s degree holder or an associate professor (or above);

5. Applicants should be under the age of fifty.

VI. Application Procedures

1. Apply online at http://admission.jsnu.edu.cn/, and submit all your application documents to JSNU before the deadline.

2. Apply online at CGS Information Management System for International Students ( http://www.campuschina.org) before the deadline. The Agency Number of JSNU is 10320.

3. The result of the review will be released through email from JSNU after the CSC’s final approval.

VII. Application Documents

1. Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship (written in English);

2. Notarized highest diploma;

    Prospective diploma recipients must submit official document issued by your current school to prove your current student status or expected graduation date. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations.

3. Academic transcripts (written in Chinese or English);

    Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations.

4. A Study Plan or Research Proposal (written in English);

    This should be a minimum of 800 words for postgraduate program applicants.

5. Curriculum Vitae;

6. Front page of the valid passport(Please make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months and has blank visa pages.);

7. Foreigner Physical Examination Form (photocopy) (The original copy will be kept by yourself and the form is uniformly printed by Chinese healthy quarantine departments. It must be written in English and can be downloaded from http://international.jsnu.edu.cn/sqyq/list.htm).

The physical examinations must cover all of the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete forms or forms without the signature of the attending physician, or the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicant are considered as invalid. Please carefully plan your physical examination schedule as the result is valid for only 6 months.

8. A valid blood test report;

9. Other supporting materials, such as publications, awards, certificate of employment/internship, etc.;

IX. Certificate

After having completed all the credit courses, the trainee will be issued a completion certificate of China-Africa Friendship Initiative by Jiangsu Normal University.
