Overview
China is the world's largest producer of sweet potatoes at present. Sweet potato biology research and talent training in China have been leading in the world. It’s said that the world sweet potato research should refer to that in China. Sweet potato biology is a characteristic discipline of Jiangsu Normal University. Compared with the existing "double first-class" construction universities in China, Jiangsu Normal University has a unique advantage in the cultivation of sweet potato biology talents. Our university has undertaken the doctoral talent training project for national special needs set up by the Degree Committee of the State Council, "National Sweet Potato Industry Technology System of Genetic Breeding and Biotechnology" since 2012. Relying on that discipline biology has been selected as advantageous discipline construction project in Jiangsu Province for three consecutive phases , our university has been approved to be a biological postdoctoral research mobile station, with the number of approved sweet-potato-related National Natural Science Foundation projects ranking first in the country for nearly four years ; our university became the national sweet potato industry technical system post scientists reliable unit in 2017. In 2019, our university won the "University Graduate Student" Chinese Government Scholarship Program, "Sweet Potato Biology Genetic Breeding and Biotechnology International Postgraduate Training Education". For the countries along the "Belt and Road", we train sweet potato biology modern agricultural high-level talents, accumulating a large number of international cooperation exchanges and talent training experience. Up to now, Jiangsu Normal University has signed cooperation agreements on training sweet potato biology talents with several universities in Africa, including Morocco, Tanzania and Ghana.

Guided by the principle of “Serving Demands, Emphasizing Characteristics, Innovate Pattern and Enforce Standards”, JSNU PhD in Biology Program (Serving National Special Demand Cultivation Program of Sweet Potato Genetic Breeding and Biotechnology) is aimed at training high-level talents, serving national sweet potato industrial technology system construction, reinforcing the combination of “Policy, Industry, Research and Application” and solving major problems in sweet potato biology and aimed at improving modern agricultural quality, effectiveness and competiveness, advancing the sustainable development of modern agriculture with Chinese characteristics.

Training Objectives

1. With the goal of cultivating high-level talents of scientific and technological innovation in the field of sweet potato biology, we serve the construction of the national sweet potato industry technology system, enhance the quality, efficiency and competitiveness of modern agriculture in the countries along the Belt and Road, and promote the sustainable development of modern agriculture with national characteristics along the Belt and Road.

2. To master the solid broad basic theories of the major discipline and study the professional knowledge in-depth systematically, understand profoundly the development direction of the discipline and the forefront of international academic research. Master the advanced methods of scientific research, have good scientific and cultural literacy and team spirit, can carry out scientific research independently.

3. To master Chinese and use it in professional study, research and academic exchanges.

Research Direction

1. Sweet potato breeding and biology technology: Starting from cultivating the new excellent sweet potato to form the mechanism of hereditary trait and seed resources, carry out the study of the relevant molecular mechanism of high yield resistance and quality characteristics of sweet potatoes and the evaluation of seed resources, and provide a solid theoretical support for the cultivation of new varieties of sweet potato.

2. Research and development biology technology of sweet potato products: With focus on the direction of nutrition and biological evaluation of sweet potato secondary metabolites, based on the fact that chronic inflammatory injury is an important biological basis for aging, metabolic syndrome and other diseases, study the molecular mechanism of reducing inflammatory damage by natural products such as sweet potato anthocyanins, develop key technologies for the separation purification of active substances such as sweet potato anthocyanins and sweet potato polysaccharides, and provide solid biotechnology support for the development of high-end health products such as sweet potato.

3. Sweet potato cultivation biology: With the direction of the new theory of high-yield anti-reverse cultivation of sweet potato, carry out research on the development and application of high-efficiency nutrient utilization, adversity physiological mechanism and high-yielding compound microbial agent, and provide plant physiology theory and technical support for sweet potato high-yield and anti-reversal cultivation.

Employment

The essential starting point of this project is to train overseas students in China in a demand-oriented way. The future employment directions of the overseas students are set when we recruit them: 1) further study (for doctoral or postdoctoral degree); 2) serve the development of sweet potato industry in the countries along the Belt and Road; 3) become technical talents and experts in sweet potato biology research and industrial development in their countries.

Training and Management

1 First-class teaching team. There are core research and development teams of Jiasu Normal University and the state sweet potato industry technology system. They are Professor Scott Edwards, a scientist in Molecular Genetic Evolution from Harvard University and an academician of the American Academy of Sciences, Professor Gary J. Loake, a scientist in plant technology from University of Edinburgh, the chief scientist of the National Sweet Potato Industry Technology System, 7 scientists, the chief leader of the biological advantageous discipline of Jiangsu Province,and scientists of the Provincial Science and Technology Innovation Team, who make up of the doctoral talent mentor team, a first-class sweet potato biology guidance power.

2 First-class experiment platform. The discipline has 4 experimental platforms, namely, a national experimental teaching demonstration center "Biology Experimental Teaching Center", Jiangsu Province University National Key Laboratory Cultivation Unit "Pharmaceutical Resource Plant Biotechnology Laboratory", Jiangsu Province System Development and Comparative Genomics Key Laboratory, Zhongdi Co-construction Molecular Biology, Genetic Resources and Biotechnology , jointly established CCCAP-China Sweet Potato Biology Research Base with the International Potato Center - Asia-Pacific Center and the National Sweet Potato Industry Technology Research and Development Center , and established "Plant Stem Cells" research platform with the University of Edinburgh from the United Kingdom. The National Sweet Potato Industry Technology Research and Development Center in Xuzhou and the National Sweet Potato Seed Resource Bank are also important support platforms for this discipline. The "National Joint Engineering Center for New Functional Food Production Technology and Equipment" in which the discipline participates has been approved by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC Gao technology (2013) No. 2064). In the past five years, the discipline has undertaken more than 100 projects such as the construction of the national sweet potato industry technology system, the national 863 plan, the national science and technology support plan, the national 948 project, the National Natural Science Foundation, etc., with annual research expenditure of more than 20 million yuan. The above research platforms and research funds can provide a strong platform and resource conditions for the implementation of the project.

3 A perfect doctor/master talent training system. At present, our university has established a "university discipline-industry system" dual-subject doctoral training model and innovative "trinity" type sweet potato biology doctoral education system, paying attention to the full integration of the basic research of sweet potato biology and sweet potato industry technology practice. Sweet potato biology genetic breeding and biotechnology doctor and master degree training project will use a joint tutor system (double tutor system) and strengthen the combination of disciplines and industries. Mentors develop corresponding training programs and training programs according to the characteristics of the project. They are responsible for guiding the international students to study courses and write thesis. This model is conducive to the concentration of sweet potato industry advantage resources of our university. With the high level of professional knowledge of mentors, we can build a discipline closely related to the "Belt and Road" initiative.

Graduation Requirements

Graduate students have to meet the following basic requirements within the designated academic years so that they can graduate and get the certificate of graduation.

1. Obey laws and regulations in China and rules and regulations in the university, have a rigorous learning style and good personalities.

2. Complete the course study stipulated in the training program within designated academic years, pass the examinations and obtain the prescribed credits.

3. Pass Third Level Test of HSK.

4. The dissertation passes the evaluation and defense.

Introduction to the School

School of Life Sciences at JSNU has grown from Department of Biology established in 1956. Due to the adjustment of national policy, it was cancelled in 1960 but was recovered in 1982. It was renamed School of Life Sciences in 2003. We offer undergraduate programs in Bioscience (Teacher-training), Biotechnology and Biopharmaceutical. Bioscience and Biotechnology are provincial distinctive majors, and majors in life sciences (including Bioscience and Biotechnology) are “the 12th Five” Key Majors of Jiangsu Province. In 2014, Bioscience entered Top 50 Nature Index China Table (ranking 42nd). Now, we have a mobile post-doctoral research station of Biology and one doctoral program in the first-level discipline (Ecology) and offer a doctoral program in Biology (for national special needs doctoral talents program) and one graduate program in the first-level discipline (Biology & Ecology) and a graduate program in Subject Teaching (Biology). There is one National Biological Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centre, one national Key Laboratory (development) of Biotechnology for Medicinal Plant of Jiangsu Province and one provincial Key Laboratory for Phylogeny and Comparative Genomics of Jiangsu Province, which are sponsored by central finance and co-sponsored by local government and university. We also own 5 teaching platforms at municipal or provincial level.
