Master of Biology Postgraduate Program

Main Introductions

In 2010, 2014 and 2018, Biology was established as the first, second and third phase construction project of Jiangsu Province's dominant disciplines. It has the right to grant a master's degree in biology. In 2012, it was awarded the special needs of the State Council's degree committee. The “National Sweet Potato Industry Technology System Genetic Breeding and Biotechnology” talent training project, and began to recruit doctoral students in sweet potato biology in 2013, and was approved as a postdoctoral mobile station in 2014. Over the years, the discipline has closely focused on the discipline construction goals of “building a high-level discipline, cultivating outstanding talents, producing major achievements, and leading economic and social development. Through the reform and innovation of institutional mechanisms, the construction of high-level discipline platforms and high-level faculty in the construction, high-quality personnel training, and high-level scientific research have achieved remarkable results, and the influence of the discipline has been continuously expanded.

Objectives

To cultivate students with basic knowledge of biology and other related disciplines, systematically usage of theory and knowledge of physical science, who has good scientific literacy and innovative ability, serves the socialist modernization of China, and develops morally, intellectually and physically to be high-level professionals.

Research Direction

Based on modern biotechnology, it focuses on the intersection and cooperation with medicine, agronomy, mathematics, physics, chemistry and informatics. It is based on the rich animal, plant and microbial resources in Jiangsu, especially in northern Jiangsu and coastal areas. Research from different levels and different angles of molecules, cells, individuals and groups has solved some key domestic technologies and international frontier issues. Six stable research directions have been formed:

1. Botany, mainly based on China's rich medicinal plant resources, focusing on the breeding, physiology, stress resistance and development of plants and plants represented by sweet potato, etc., screening anti-tumor, anti-virus, anti-aging rare or new active substances, as well as high-quality sweet potato new varieties that are highly productive and resistant to pests and diseases.

2. Zoology, mainly focusing on China's abundant animal resources, focusing on animal genetic resources and utilization.

3. Microbiology, mainly based on special habitat microbial resources, with bio-high technology as a means, focusing on the regulation of fungal active metabolites and the research and development of resource micro-organisms.

4. Genetics, mainly based on resource biology, its biological characteristics at the species level, cell level and molecular level, focusing on animal and plant functional genomics, genetic mechanisms and other research.

5. Cell biology, together with molecular biology as the main research methods, focusing on genetics and environment, genetics and evolution.

6. Biochemical and molecular biology, using biochemistry and molecular biology as a means to extract, isolate and purify anti-tumor, anti-viral and anti-aging-based active substances, focusing on anti-aging neurobiology of natural products. Study molecular mechanisms to carry out research.

Duration

3 years.

Cultivation Method

The whole cultivation process combines the characteristics of high-level personnel training with the new characteristics of modern science and technology development, follows the principle of linking theory with practice, and pays equal attention to curriculum learning and essay work, so that graduate students can master the basic theories and professional knowledge of the subject and the basic methods of scientific research. And have certain practical (testing) skills, innovative ability and ability to engage in production practice. The training method is combined with the tutor's collective training and the tutor group's collective training. The tutor formulates the training plan according to the research direction, training objectives, postgraduate specific conditions and the principle of teaching students according to their aptitude.

Curriculum and credit requirements

The curriculum is divided into two major categories, degree and non-degree. The total credits for the course should be no less than 37 credits.

Degree offered

Those who have completed the prescribed credits and passed the thesis degree will be allowed to graduate and be awarded a diploma; in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Regulations of the People's Republic of China, they will reach the master's degree, and the Master's degree assessment committee may grant a Master of Science.
