Overview
Guided by the principle of “Serving Demands, Emphasizing Characteristics, Innovate Pattern and Enforce Standards”, JSNU PhD in Biology Program (Serving National Special Demand Cultivation Program of Sweet Potato Genetic Breeding and Biotechnology) is aimed at training high-level talents, serving national sweet potato industrial technology system construction, reinforcing the combination of “Policy, Industry, Research and Application” and solving major problems in sweet potato biology and aimed at improving modern agricultural quality, effectiveness and competiveness, advancing the sustainable development of modern agriculture with Chinese characteristics.
Objective
1. Cultivating students, who have a decent academic style and a strong sense of team work, entrepreneurship spirit and sense of social responsibility, with Patriotism, Scientific Spirit, Legal Consciousness, Integrity Awareness and Innovative Spirit;
2. Cultivating students, who are familiar with the history, the current situation and development of the discipline, with a solid basis of modern Biology, professional knowledge of Sweet Potato Genetic Breeding and Biotechnology and experimental techniques;
3. Cultivating students with innovative scientific thoughts and the ability of achieving scientific results to meet the demands of work in related departments and fields for national economic development;
4. Students should master at least one foreign language and apply it into the study, research and academic communication;
Research Fields
1. Sweet Potato Biology and Genetic Breeding
Applying systematic biology theory and modern biotechnology, studying on the genetic theory of sweet potato genetic breeding, making full use of resources of sweet potato, exploring key factors of effective and specialized-type of sweet potato, solving the problems of degeneration of fine breed and low production, and the prevention and control of diseases and pests
2. Sweet Potato Biotechnology and Product Development
Applying modern biotechnology into comprehensive development of sweet potato and exploring its influence on human’s metabolism and mechanism by developing related medicine, healthcare products and functional food; researching sweet potato high-effect fermented ethanol.
3. Sweet Potato Physiology and Planting
Combing practice, conducting ecological theory and application of sweet potato physiology and exploring the relation of sweet potato production and quality with environment and adjusting measures; establishing effective planting system by integrating crops, environment and plant
Duration
Doctoral candidates (Professional Degree): 3 years (no longer than 6 years)

Degree Offered
Students must complete the coursework to fulfill the minimum credit requirement and qualify for the degree conferral. A thesis defense is an essential part of the degree.
