School of Life Sciences at JSNU has grown from Department of Biology established in 1956. Due to the adjustment of national policy, it was cancelled in 1960 but was recovered in 1982. It was renamed School of Life Sciences in 2003. We offer undergraduate programs in Bioscience (Teacher-training), Biotechnology and Biopharmaceutical. Bioscience and Biotechnology are provincial distinctive majors, and majors in life sciences (including Bioscience and Biotechnology) are “the 12th Five” Key Majors of Jiangsu Province. In 2014, Bioscience entered Top 50 Nature Index China Table (ranking 42nd). Now, we have a mobile post-doctoral research station of Biology and one doctoral program in the first-level discipline (Ecology) and offer a doctoral program in Biology (for national special needs doctoral talents program) and one graduate program in the first-level discipline (Biology & Ecology) and a graduate program in Subject Teaching (Biology). There is one National Biological Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centre, one national Key Laboratory (development) of Biotechnology for Medicinal Plant of Jiangsu Province and one provincial Key Laboratory for Phylogeny and Comparative Genomics of Jiangsu Province, which are sponsored by central finance and co-sponsored by local government and university. We also own 5 teaching platforms at municipal or provincial level.
Besides, we have the 1st, 2nd and 3rd phases of provincial predominant discipline (Biology), provincial key disciplines (Genetic& Ecology) and first batch of MOE National Cultivation Program Base for Excellent Teachers of Biology in High School, Provincial Base for Excellent Teachers of Biology in Secondary School and Base for New Curriculum Standard Excellent Teachers of Biology in Secondary School.
The structure of our faculty is strong and reasonable and the number totals 66, including 19 professors (13 doctoral supervisors), 27 associate professors. Totally, 51 teachers have PhD (including doctoral candidates). Teachers, under 45 years old, all have a master or doctor degree. There are 7 part-time professors from NAS and 1 professor enjoying MOE “Higher Education Excellent Teacher Foundation”, 1 scientist serving National Sweet Potato Industry Technical System, 2 Provincial Distinguished Professors, 2 Provincial High Level Innovative and Enterprising Talents, 7 academic leaders of Provincial “333 High Level Talent Program”, 5 academic leaders of Provincial “Qing Lan Project”, 4 candidates of Provincial “Six Talent Peak”, 1 winner of Provincial “Labor Medal”. At the same time, we have many excellent provincial innovative academic teams.
This school has a building covering 5,000 square meters, teaching facilities costing ¥80 million Yuan including a base and a specimen room covering more than 6,000 square meters.
By far, we have undertaken nearly 32 key national-level projects and published over 850 papers in PNAS and other international academic journals from home and abroad. We have 60 patents and 5 ministerial or provincial scientific and technological awards.
We consistently attach great importance to talents cultivation and their overall development. We arranged students to go to Lianyungang, Tianmu Mountains for field study. In recent three years, our students have got 20 national undergraduate scientific and technological innovation projects and many first prizes in national competitions.Undergraduate students published over 70 papers.
We have 686 full-time undergraduate students, 202 graduate students and 29 doctoral students. The enrollment rate of graduate entrance examination is quite high. Large numbers of students have been recruited by CAS, Peking University, Fudan University and other famous universities and research institutes at home and abroad. Lots of graduates won the title of Changjiang Scholar or became the winner of “Outstanding Youth Foundation” or “People’s Educationist”.
Our aim is to insist the principle of Teacher & Student First and Quality First. We will keep strengthening discipline basis, expanding professional channels, improving talents ability of innovation, practice, adaptability and perspective.
